Timed-write Essay

                                                               Brief Introduction

In this section of my blog , I will be publishing my essay as part of my blog that our English teacher , Mrs.Borcherdt gave us a certain amount of time to choose between two pictures she provided which are "The Spirit of Education" drawn by Norman Rockwell and "Rat Race" drawn by Paul Fitzgerald later shown below this introduction paragraph. For me , I chose "Rat Race" drawn by Paul Fitzgerald to be analysed in my timed-written essay.

    Timed-write Essay

In this painting from ECM ( Ethical Consumer Magazine) from UK ( United Kingdom) entitled "Rat Race" drawn and illustrated by Paul Fitzgerald in 2012 claims that happiness is a continuous cycle of three consecutive things - working harder , earning more money and buying more things that satisfies you in this four-boxed cartoon painting.

Just with a glimpse of observation , the rats in the four-boxed cartoon painting symbolizes us , the  humans whom are trapped in maze and following the arrows with enormous text bolded as their guidance to attempt to escape the maze.Mostly,to find the answer of achieving maximum happiness.Sooner or later , the rats aka humans realize there isn't an exit which symbolizes as the answer to obtaining maximum happiness , which indicates there's no ending point where the rats can stop . They have to keep going through this cycle if they strive for happiness as part of their life.

Connecting up , on the second cartoon box there's a arrow titled as "Stay Ahead Of The Race" located on the left slanted wall on the second cartoon-box , this encourages the rats to put in extra effort to stay ahead of the pack , being the first one to loot their desired happiness. Next , " Happiness is just around the corner!" appears in every cartoon box painting , this is what motivates and gives the fuel to the rats that drives them to walk an extra step. To backup this statement , what really motivates them is the word is "corner" and how the maze is structured because the rats are willingly to take an extra steps because they think what they desire the most is awaiting just around the corner , making them think the ending point is just around the corner .However , the rats are just getting tricked heavily by the signs . They were so blinded by achieving maximum happiness they didn't realize that they are running in circles. This shows that to achieve happiness as part of your life you will have to go into a continuous and unstoppable cycle.

Lastly and unfortunately , in the fourth cartoon box , the rats finally realised when it's too late that there isn't a finishing point to this so-called "maze" when the arrow titled "Keep going" appeared to them. This signifies that if they truly desire to have happiness , an intellectual emotion to be part of their life , they will have to repeat the same procedure everytime to obtain it.

To any certain extend , I full disagree with Paul Fitzgerald's claim in this four-boxed cartoon painting. Firstly, the painting's title should be re-entitled as "Rat Wheel" or "Rat Cycle" instead of "Rat Race" because this four-boxed cartoon painting shows that there isn't an ending point designed within it. But in a wheel , it's a completely round- shaped figure that keeps going through a starting point.Secondly, this four-boxed cartoon painting origin is biased , it's only viewing between a matured teenager and adult perspective based on Fitzgerald's concept on working harder and earning money. But if Fitzgerald looks at an overview perspective , his claim is invalid. For example , pre-schoolers can have happiness by watching cartoon or playing with friends at public playgrounds , even studying at school can give them happiness.

Others will argue that finding happiness is not through a race nor a cycle but a maze. The reason behind this concept is that a person will try different pathways repeatedly in order to escape the maze. In this case , a person will try different techniques of finding true happiness to them until they find the right pathway that truly gives them happiness they enjoy. However , this claim is invalid because a maze only has one route to escape this enigma-like box , which in other means says that there's only one pathway to find happiness for everyone.
